Mönchhof (Monk’s House) is one of the oldest wine estates in the Mosel. It was formerly in the possession of the Kloster Himmerod, a Cisterian Abbey, and records exist dating it to 1177. Today the estate is run by the affable Robert Eymael Jr. and the holdings include superb sites in Ürziger Würzgarten, Erdener Treppchen, and Erdener Prälat. The 2010 vintage in the Mosel offers pure and truly refreshing wines that have firm acidity. They are simply delicious to drink in the spring.

Winemaker Mike Almquist has been perfecting his craft for more than three years and is finally releasing his first wines. These are full-flavored reds with interesting textures and styles, individually crafted to emulate European counterparts. Almquist Family Vintners is located in Seattle’s Fremont District along the canal near Ponti. In addition to artisan wines, Almquist is making over 100 distillates that will be available for both tasting and sale at the facility (up to two liters per person per day). Their affiliated restaurant, The Book Bindery, is scheduled to open October 1. Mike has hired a chef who cooked at Thomas Keller’s Per Se in New York, so we are expecting great things!
